The design embodies the duality of rough and smooth, using tactile and olfactory elements to immerse visitors in a unique, multi-sensory experience. Each element\u2014from the textured walls and furniture to the scent-infused materials\u2014pays homage to traditional aromas and surfaces found in rituals and daily life, inviting guests to connect with their surroundings through the subtleties of touch and fragrance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This design proposal, located on the corner of 160 Jan Smuts Avenue in Rosebank, Johannesburg, focuses on tectonics\u2014the methods and materials of construction\u2014while questioning the \u2018what, why, and how\u2019 of architecture. By exploring conventions and experimenting with alternatives in scent and texture, the project delves into a philosophy where making informs concepts and practice opens theory. It challenges visual-centric design practices, aiming to deepen the historical and cultural significance of cafes in a local context.
