The Urban Mend:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bapedi traditional healing spaces in the city<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Coming from an elderly family that values culture, practices, spirituality, rituals, and traditional medicine, I am a modern man who finds himself in an urban context. My interest in Bapedi traditional healing spaces is heavily influenced by the migration to an urban environment in search of job opportunities, educational advancement, and a chance to experience life in one of the continent\u2019s most dynamic cities. It is important to note that certain rituals involved in this context require the presence of spiritually gifted traditional herbalists, healers, or an elderly family member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project delves into the study of a series of Bapedi Spiritual and Traditional Healers, aiming to showcase an urban healing compound within the city of Johannesburg. The impetus for this project is the examination of rituals involving red ochre, which entails a specific process of preparation and storage. Red ochre holds significant importance to the ancestors, limiting access to specific individuals within a family or community. This is particularly observed in the context of the Homecoming Ceremony for Bapedi men following initiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scope of the project expands to encompass the rituals and practices of Traditional Healers. Here, spatial compositions and logics are analyzed in relation to these practices, ultimately informing the design proposal that takes the form of an urban healing compound. The intention behind this presentation is to facilitate access to traditional healers when transitioning to an urban setting, specifically within the Bapedi community, thereby enabling individuals to reconnect with their ancestors through these rituals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
