Situating the Xhosa ancestral home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This body of work rigorously examines the intricate process of transplanting ancestral homes and ritual practices from traditional rural settings to the dynamic urban landscape. The primary objective is to preserve Xhosa cultural identity and knowledge systems in the face of rapid urbanization sweeping across South Africa. At the heart of this project is the goal of uncovering and comprehending these deeply ingrained cultural practices, which serve as the foundation for informing and guiding the detailed research and design aspects of this proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study of the relocation of ancestral homes delves into the multifaceted dimensions of materiality, rituals, and spatial elements that collectively reinforce and evoke the ethereal presence of ancestors. This endeavor aims to provide the Xhosa community with intimate urban spaces specifically designed for ritualistic practices within the bustling landscape of Johannesburg. The proposed solution takes the form of a unique housing typology, navigating between conventional urban housing models and those rooted in the traditional homestead setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This extensive exploration originates from personal experience, having been raised in the rural outskirts of the Eastern Cape and subsequently transitioning to an urban environment. This profound shift triggered a palpable sense of displacement, stemming from the absence of spaces conducive to essential ritual practices. These practices, integral to maintaining Xhosa identity and a connection with ancestral roots, become a poignant focal point in the design and conceptualization of the proposed urban housing typology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
