{"id":164,"date":"2023-11-20T17:52:50","date_gmt":"2023-11-20T15:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gsa.ac.za\/summer-show\/?p=164"},"modified":"2023-11-22T15:21:42","modified_gmt":"2023-11-22T13:21:42","slug":"david-mathee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gsa.ac.za\/summer-show\/blog\/2023\/11\/20\/david-mathee\/","title":{"rendered":"David Mathee"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong>Preserving the Pilgrimage to Freedom through Sensory Memories<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My Thesis is titled &#8220;Preserving the Pilgrimage to Freedom through Sensory Memories.&#8221; This project is an exploration into the power of sensory experiences in memorializing significant historical journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project is anchored in the theoretical frameworks of phenomenology, ethnography, and the concept of LeKgotla. LeKgotla, a traditional Tswana gathering place for decision-making and community events. The philosophy &#8211; a shared, communal experience rooted in respect and remembrance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project centres around a historical route in Lobatse, Botswana, the leads to the peak of the Peleng Hill. This route was a critical escape path for the freedom fighters during the apartheid era. The project seeks to enhance the sensory experiences along the historical route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intervention is a Pilgrimage walk with multi-sensory experiences along the Peleng Hill and on top of the hill that seek to translate the historical significance of Lobatse. The design incorporates different-sized gabion walls, adobe brick, and thatch, which allows most of the design to be built using materials found on the hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The design features a series of individual and group auditory spaces.
