Black Intellectual Praxes is an interdisciplinary collective established in 2023, dedicated to fostering innovative and critical discourse on the legacies of settler colonialism and apartheid, as well as contemporary challenges in the post-apartheid and post-colonial contexts. Founded primarily by political science students, the collective aims to promote multidisciplinary approaches to world-making that reinvigorate the post-colonial moment with imagination.
Black Intellectual Praxes is launching a journal titled Black Praxes: a critical multidisciplinary journal of African intellectual thought and cultural practice.. This initiative is rooted in movements like Rhodes Must Fall and Fees Must Fall, which highlighted institutional racism and the urgent need for reform within South African universities and society. Black Intellectual Praxes seeks to bridge the gaps in collective memory surrounding these struggles, underscoring the importance of remembering the past to inform a more equitable future for all.
Through collaborations with the GSA, Black Praxis aims to test out the material implications on the imagination of liberated futures. The workshops aim to bridge the gap between ideas and their materialisation in publishing, magazines, and zines as mediums for circulating discourse.
The event will begin with a series of presentations by scholars who are involved in the founding of the journals and those who are not. In the afternoon, participants will engage in a zine-making workshop that aims to transform their collective world-making into a portable publication.
Additionally, Léopold Lembart of the Funambulist Magazine will present a lecture on the publication and its ongoing work as part of the programme.EventOther
