Graduate School of Architecture Summer Show (2024) – Attitude
“Attitude” is not just a stance or posture but a dynamic orientation—one that is internally motivated implying both direction and purpose. Like a missile adjusting its attitude, we continuously adjust and refine our trajectory as we navigate through the complexities of contemporary architectural production and discourse and the contested social and cultural landscapes of South Africa, the Diaspora and the wider world.
“Attitude” also conveys a sense of distinctiveness—our commitment to offering alternative ways of approach, of thinking, being, and working in the world. This is not simply a matter of opposition but of presenting a critical and passionate response to the contexts we engage with, both locally and globally. The transformational attitudes that permeate our work shape modes of practice that are reflective, evolving, and deeply engaged with the critical challenges of our condition.
As we explore what it means to navigate architectural education in a time of constant change, “Attitude” symbolises our orientation toward innovation, critical inquiry, and a commitment to reshaping architectural knowledge and practice. Our approach may not always follow a defined or an orthodox path, but it is driven by a deep passion for discovery, critical reflection, and the pursuit of transformative possibilities.
This year, we take a bold step in furthering our commitment to evolving practices, interrogating new forms of spatial production, and questioning established boundaries. In doing so, we continue to position ourselves with a clear focus on creating futures that are imaginative, equitable, and impactful.
