GSA Architecture Week – Ground
The Graduate School of Architecture was established with the ambition of developing a transformative pedagogy, one that centred Africa in both its conception and operation. Over the past decade, the School has become a place of gathering, bringing together students, practitioners, academics and creative voices to collectively explore architectural thought and practice. Architecture Week has emerged as one of the School’s most public expressions of that pedagogical project.
Through a programme of student reviews, public lectures, and symposia, it opens the work of the GSA to wider audiences while inviting diverse perspectives into the educational process. Rather than presenting architecture as a finished product, the week foregrounds it as an ongoing practice of inquiry, making and exchange.
As the Graduate School of Architecture marks its tenth anniversary, Architecture Week offers an opportunity to reflect on the evolving project of architectural education. Many of the questions that informed the School’s founding, including decolonisation, transformation, ecology, migration, material practice and the production of knowledge, continue to shape contemporary architectural discourse. In bringing together voices around work in progress, the week affirms the Graduate School of Architecture’s commitment to architecture as a collective project of reimagining the architectural ‘ground’, and continually reshaping it through dialogue, experimentation and practice.
