Principal Heritage Consultant | Founder & Managing Director, Khensani Heritage Consulting
Khensani Maluleke is a seasoned heritage management specialist with nearly three decades of experience in the heritage, museum, and cultural landscape sectors, both within South Africa and internationally. He is the Founder and Managing Director of Khensani Heritage Consulting (Pty) Ltd, a heritage management firm with a global footprint, offering expertise in feasibility studies, policy development, heritage impact assessments, strategic planning, and project management.
Khensani’s professional journey began in 1996 at the Transnet Heritage Foundation, where he served as Curator, overseeing research, exhibitions, and outreach programmes. He went on to become the inaugural Heritage Manager at Freedom Park Trust in 2000, leading the development of the foundational concept document for the iconic national heritage site in Tshwane, which involved international consultations and study tours across Europe, North America, and Africa.
In 2003, he co-founded Matimu Heritage Solutions, one of the first black-owned heritage consulting firms in South Africa, and later established Khensani Heritage Consulting in 2007. Under his leadership, the firm has successfully delivered over 500 heritage projects, including work on World Heritage Sites, liberation heritage initiatives, and projects for international organisations such as UNESCO and ICCROM.
Khensani holds a BA in Education and History from the University of the North, a Postgraduate Diploma in Heritage and Museum Studies from the University of Pretoria, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Marketing from the University of Hull (UK).
He has served in various leadership and advisory roles, including:
Chairperson, Robben Island World Heritage Site
National Chairperson, South African Geographical Names Council (SAGNC)
Trustee, Johannesburg Heritage Trust
Council Member, National Heritage Council
Member, Heritage Permit Applications Committee (SAHRA – Gauteng)
Panel Member for the development of South Africa’s National Museum Policy
In addition to his consultancy work, Khensani has contributed as a lecturer and guest speaker at several academic institutions, including the University of Pretoria, University of the Western Cape, and the University of the Witwatersrand.
His extensive international experience spans countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Senegal, Kenya, Mauritius, Tanzania, Namibia, Mozambique, and others—positioning him as a thought leader in cultural heritage, memory, and nation-building.
