@mxolisimakhubosouthafrica, a South African architect and educator, is celebrated for his contributions to architecture, urbanism, and his commitment to transforming African urban environments. As a registered architect with both SACAP and GIFA, he navigates architectural theory, practice, and construction management. Mxolisi is the Architectural History and Theory Convenor at the University of Johannesburg’s Graduate School of Architecture with its emphasis on decolonial pedagogy, archival research, and inclusive architectural discourse.
As a founding director of Blackboard Design Lab (Pty) Ltd, Mxolisi co-leads a multidisciplinary practice that thrives on collaborative design innovation. The work of the practice includes interior design, urban research, and construction management with clients including Tanzania Volkswagen, South Africa’s MTN Communication company and several heritage rehabilitation projects in inner-city Johannesburg. His architecture and planning policy background ensures that projects build upon private and public commissions for more accessible urban space.
Mxolisi represents the GSA as an editorial board member of Places Journal where he advocates for increased representation of modern African cities, landscapes, and building concerns. His recognition in the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative stems from his research into informality’s role in urban regeneration reflecting a unique approach to reading, writing and imagining Johannesburg. Inclusivity, innovation, and a dedication to shaping future architects define Makhubo’s journey, positioning him as a bridge between pedagogy and practice.
