Bridging Tradition and Modernity Through the Design of an Initiation School at 160 Jan Smuts Avenue
This project explores the disparity between rural and urban areas in contemporary society, examining why rural contexts often lack the modern advancements in infrastructure and technology found in urban environments. While rural areas may seem less developed, they hold profound cultural and traditional significance, serving as custodians of our African heritage and identity. Our sense of self should not be left behind when we move into urban spaces; instead, it should be integrated and celebrated.
Through the lens of an initiation school, this design aims to create a sacred landscape bridging the gap between rural and urban experiences. The program will connect initiates to traditional practices and historical teachings without requiring long journeys to rural areas, especially for those with limited family ties to these regions. This space will foster a deep connection to tradition, offering an authentic learning environment that brings the essence of our cultural identity into the urban realm.
