[Re] Purposing Infrastructure: 

Ecological restoration and human connection through hyacinth

Hartbeespoort Dam faces severe pollution issues, forcing vundu fish (catfish) to mutate to survive within the thermocline. A thermocline is a distinct layer in bodies of water where there’s a rapid temperature change with depth. It separates warmer surface water from cooler, deeper water and has significant ecological implications. Pollution disrupts the surface waters, while the thermocline provides a refuge for these fish, leading to genetic adaptations to double their size weighing in at 55kg minimum.

Efforts to combat pollution and restore the dam’s health are ongoing, highlighting the urgent need for environmental protection.

Over the next 20 to 30 years, the implementation of this project promises transformative and profound benefits for both the community and the water body at Hartbeespoort Dam by using the dam wall as a hyacinth production space. Environmental rehabilitation efforts, biodiversity enhancement, and improved water management will contribute to a healthier ecosystem. The project’s focus on community education, economic opportunities, and cultural preservation will foster a more sustainable and resilient community. With the integration of green spaces, recreational opportunities, and climate-resilient practices, the long-term vision encompasses a thriving community that takes pride in its role as environmental stewards. This project offers a comprehensive and forward-looking approach that aims to create long-lasting positive impacts over the coming decades.

Overall, the study aims to uncover the untapped potential of water hyacinth and its various applications, from compost generation through vermiculture systems to the extraction of valuable fibres for diverse industrial uses. By effectively utilizing water hyacinth resources, we stand a chance to address these environmental challenges, create sustainable solutions, and potentially contribute to the development of innovative materials and products.
