Echoes of Change in Newtown

I am a musician from Thohoyandou and my project aims to unite music and architecture in Johannesburg’s Newtown District. I explore the synergy between music and architecture to reshape urban spaces. Focusing on Bassline Live and the Johannesburg Municipal Transport building, I envision an intervention that revitalises Newtown’s musical heritage, fostering connections, cultural revival, and inclusive urban vibrancy.

Newtown, Johannesburg, is a diverse urban district with several community engagement hotspots that play pivotal roles in fostering connections, cultural exchange, and urban vibrancy. These hotspots are hubs of activity and interaction, drawing residents and visitors alike into the heart of Newtown’s social tapestry.

My architectural intervention fuses music and design to rejuvenate Johannesburg’s Newtown District. My design unites diverse music genres, honours cultural heritage, and breathes new life into urban spaces. Inspired by the Basotho blanket, my structure houses multi-genre music spaces, pathways of connection, and harmonious dialogue between architecture, culture, and community.
