Exploring the space of non-rigid, non-linear form
15 Fredman tower, situated in the sandton CBD, is an office building with a lot of view and a beautifully designed interior, the lobby is wide and inviting, the office spaces are spacious and organised.however, the building is not fully utilized. tenants have said that there are a lack of services like cafes’ and restaurants. as well as a lack of interaction between tenants.
The objective within our unit is experiment and implement different materials through combination and redesign through permutation to better understand and develop new ways of sustainability architecture as a way of bringing new purpose to already existing buildings within the community.
As a group we were assigned to develop a site plan using creative methods. My site plan for Fredman we used craft board and spray paint to program the space in its current state. The building is sprayed in bright yellow, the parking spaces were fitted with textured paper. The outcome of this assignment was to demonstrate the different aspects of fredman with different materials. The combination and mixing process of concepts began with this site plan
The design process
My Intervention’s inspired by “organic form” because of its irregular and abstract shape. My argument being why does a work space only have to be rigid and linear in nature? why can’t there be a recreational space within an office thats non – linear and still interconnected with confines of the work area.the initial idea when coming up with an intervention for fredman tower was to play with voids within the confines of the building. Fredman is an ordinary office block with a lot of unused space. the atrium that sits at the center of the building flashes light from above down to the lobby. the idea to use voids came about with a plan to fill the entire building with spheres and fill the building with foam and then remove the spheres until only the remaining form (the negative) has taken over the interior of the building.
