The Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg was founded to do more than teach architecture – it was founded to transform it.

Over the past decade, the GSA has expanded access to architectural education for students historically excluded by race, gender, and income. At the same time, it has redefined architectural pedagogy itself – questioning inherited canons, unsettling imported assumptions, and re-rooting knowledge in African contexts.

Here, architecture is not taught as a fixed discipline, but explored as a living, evolving practice – shaped by climate, craft, community, infrastructure, and the complex realities of our cities and landscapes. The GSA operates as a living laboratory, where new ideas are tested, new forms of knowledge are produced, and new futures are imagined.

But this work is far from complete.

Transformative Futures is our commitment to the next decade – an invitation to build an architectural future that is grounded in place, driven by innovation, and committed to equity and justice.

Your support will contribute towards transforming the profession that demands a diverse and empowered student body, and you can impact a student’s life with a gift of any amount.

Building a future-ready institution requires ongoing investment in equipment and facilities – ensuring the GSA can prepare its students for a rapidly advancing technological future through your support of our capital needs. At the same time, a transformative future is built on collaboration and exchange; your contribution can expand our community’s access to leading thinkers, innovative ideas, and inspiring places by supporting our events and exchanges fund.

Join us in making Transformative Futures possible

Architecture shapes how we live, gather, and belong. It determines whose histories are preserved, whose futures are imagined, and whose voices are heard.

A transformative future is not a distant horizon. It is an urgent project – one being designed, tested, and built today.
