[UN]-Spoken Narratives of the Women in Botswana
My project deals with the underrepresentation of women in Botswana and how this highlights the historical dominance of male influence in creating and preserving public monuments and commemorative spaces. Despite the ongoing role of women in Botswana as custodians of cultural memory and traditions within their respective tribes, the prevalence of patriarchal attitudes and the establishment of specific criteria for determining heroic action and worthiness frequently impede the public recognition and acknowledgement of women.
The omission of women’s commemoration and their significant contributions to the nation is a profound injustice. Women have a voice comparable to men, can exert influence, assume leadership roles, and construct civilizations. However, their contributions are often disregarded, leading to marginalization. The project aims to create a more equitable portrayal of Botswana’s historical and cultural legacy and counteract the ongoing marginalization of women by unearthing, elevating, and safeguarding their stories.
